In the 2008 World Cup quarterfinals, Nati’s defender Philippe Furrer made a scandal over which he can laugh out loud exactly 12 years later.
“If it wasn’t so tragic, it would be a laugh,” SRF commentator Jann Billetter said into the microphone exactly 12 years ago today. And Mario Rottaris, the expert by his side, added to the shooting scene: “I have never seen anything like this.”
What happened? National defender Philippe Furrer, who was quite experienced at the age of 22, caught his own goalkeeper Martin Gerber in the corner with a strong shot (see video above). In the World Cup quarterfinals, it was already 3-0 in favor of the Russians and the second own Swiss goal in the game after 7 minutes.
So it didn’t go according to plan
Furrer, a deserving player at club level in SC Bern, HC Lugano and since 2018 for Freiburg-Gottéron, has always had a smile for this action. You still have this slip and you probably always will. May 15, 2008 in Québec will be unforgettable for him.
The Swiss had to act outnumbered for the first time early in the game. With a bully in his own area, Furrer acted in such an unfortunate manner and hit goalkeeper Gerber in the back. “The stalker repeated himself about three times and in the end a lot of things went wrong,” recalls the 34-year-old man.
Then my left foot sank, and I finally twisted completely.
In the flashback, number 54 at the time primarily criticized the stance. “Then my left foot sank, and in the end I totally forgave.” The intention would have been for him to play through the goal behind the goal. This would have given Switzerland a so-called “victory” and Marc Reichert should have thrown himself into the left wing. “But Reichert is still waiting for this record on the blue line,” Furrer says with a laugh.
With this easier exit to overcome
Goalkeeper Gerber only had to shake his head violently on the flop. Furrer says today that he was pleased that the scene was not decisive. “Russia was much stronger and couldn’t be beaten that day anyway.” In the end, the national team received a 0: 6 slap in the face.
