The Valais remains shaken by the second crown wave. The pandemic claimed 59 deaths in this canton alone last week. From Monday to Friday, this means an average of more than ten deaths per day.
This value has never been higher in Valais since the virus became rampant. The local undertakers are now feeling this too. Now you are at the limit. “We are completely overwhelmed,” says Patrick Quarroz, president of the Valais Funeral Services Association, due to the extreme demand.

One of these undertakers is Eric Pagliotti. The 63-year-old runs a funeral home in Martigny VS together with his son Boris. Facing “Le Matin Dimanche”, Pagliotti says: “Soon we will no longer know what to do with the dead.” More than 30 burials are an absolute challenge for the operation. “Due to the current situation, funerals often have to be postponed,” explains Pagliotti.

The circumstances also make it particularly difficult for family members. While in many cantons up to 50 people are still allowed to abdicate, in Valais the number is limited to 30. Dueling properly is often difficult.
«You have to put yourself in the shoes of the bereaved. These experiences can have psychological consequences for them, ”says Boris Pagliotti. In individual cases, relatives have even been offered to videotape an abdication or broadcast it on the Internet.
It is not foreseeable that the funeral home situation will ease anytime soon. According to statistics, excess mortality among people over 65 in Valais is currently + 100 percent compared to the previous year. (cat)
