In the Aargau community of Möhlin, 22 asylum seekers had to be quarantined. The community built a fence around their accommodation.
A resident of the asylum accommodation in Möhlin, Aargau, tested positive for the corona virus last week. Therefore, the 22 people staying there are quarantined for ten days. It is not allowed to leave the accommodation of the municipality until Thursday, November 26. The resident who tested positive was transferred to the corona isolation station for asylum seekers operated by the canton of Aargau.
Fence around the building
The municipality of Möhlin and the company ORS, responsible for the care of asylum seekers in the municipality, have taken additional measures. They had a fence put up around the property. In addition, a security service guards the entrance. ORS company delivers food to accommodation. The community said neighbors reacted “sympathetically” to the measures. When the quarantine is lifted, the fence will come off again.
Why close?
The fence caused several reactions. The move is called “humanly reprehensible” or “arrogant,” the “Neue Fricktaler Zeitung” cites in letters to the editor and comments on social media. Volunteers also criticized the action.
The move was made because, by experience, not all residents of asylum shelters take the prescribed quarantine with the same seriousness, explains Lutz Hahn, spokesman for ORS. There is a risk that they will leave their accommodation despite the ban and go shopping. And this would also affect other asylum shelters or the public.
People in the accommodation would be cared for more intensively and with more staff during the quarantine. There are a lot of conversations, Lutz said. You have had good experiences with this approach. There were no additional infections with the corona virus in Möhlin
Reaction according to concept
The community is said to have acted in accordance with the concept of protection that was developed together with ORS, according to Möhlins Community Secretary Marius Fricker. In consultation with the police, it was decided that the quarantine concept would be implemented with a fence around the accommodation.
The criticism comes from some people on social media. Others passed by and delivered food to residents. A table box was also donated for accommodation.
No regulation of canton fences
The canton of Aargau does not comment on the specific case of Möhlin. Each community must act independently, explains Stephan Müller, Head of the Asylum Care Section. And Möhlin reacted to the best of my knowledge.
Communities were shown various quarantine procedures in the course of the corona pandemic. However, the canton cannot make general recommendations because each accommodation in the communities is different, Müller said.
However, a fence has not yet been erected around cantonal asylum shelters because of Corona. Explains the canton’s medical service order to residents and explains the consequences of an offense. A “prison situation” is not created due to quarantine.
