Mask required outside
Up to this point: Only at train stations and bus stops, Aargau spoke out against the requirement for open-air masks in the settlement area. This should only apply “if the required distance of 1.5 meters is not maintained in case of prolonged contact”, but also outside the settlement area.
New: Outdoors, masks should be worn in busy pedestrian areas of urban centers and town centers. In a gathering of people where distance cannot be kept (for example, busy streets, squares and parks), you should also wear masks.
Mandatory mask indoors
Up to this point: A general mask requirement applies in all public access rooms (eg shopping malls).
New: Masks should be worn indoors and outdoors in stores, zoos, theaters, cinemas, concert and event venues, restaurants, bars, and markets.
Mask requirement at work
Up to this point: A matter for employers, several companies in Aargau introduced a mask requirement, the canton recommended wearing a mask in the open-plan office if distance could not be kept.
New: The mask requirement applies to all employees indoors, unless distance can be maintained. Starting at midnight, the cashier behind Plexiglas and the kitchen staff must also wear a mask.
Fabric masks ban
Up to this point: There are no specific requirements on the quality and protective effect of masks: the Aargau called for a ban on cloth masks that offer little protection.
New: There is no prohibition on cloth masks and the amended federal ordinance does not contain any quality requirements for masks.
Rules for schools
Up to this point: In school buildings, a mask was compulsory for all adults (with the exception of classroom teachers), in vocational and cantonal schools and at the University of Applied Sciences of North-West Switzerland also for students.
New: There are no changes to the mask requirement, as per federal law, it only applies to vocational and high schools. The cantons are still responsible for primary schools. Face-to-face teaching is generally prohibited in all universities.
Requirements for restaurants
Up to this point: Masks are required in all restaurants while you are not at the table. Tables should be separated by at least 1.5 m or separated by Plexiglas panels. The curfew and the restriction of the number of guests per table have not yet existed in Aargau.
New: In all restaurants and bars, a maximum of four people can sit at a table, except families with children. Also, a mask is required if you are not sitting at the table. Restaurants and bars must be closed between 11 pm and 6 am

Selling alcohol across the street
Up to this point: Allowed without restrictions, the Aargau requested the prohibition of the sale of alcohol between 8 pm and 5 am in the consultation on the planned federal measures.
New: Still unlimited, the Federal Council does not respond to the canton’s request.
Rules for clubs and bars
Up to this point: Visitor limit of 50 people (valid from October 20), previously the limit in Aargau was 100 people. It is mandatory to wear a mask on the table in clubs and bars, the mask can only be removed if you have consumed something.
New: The operation of discos and dance halls is prohibited. According to the Federal Council, these harbor an increased risk of spreading the virus.
Restrictions on private events
Up to this point: There is no limit on the number of guests in Aargau, the canton’s medical service recommends no more than 30 people. Since October 20, the registration of the contact details of the guests has been mandatory for all private events in Aargau, even for less than 15 participants; the federal government only stipulated it for more than 15 guests.
New: Because many infections occur in private, the number of people for events with family and friends in private rooms is limited to 10.
Big events
Up to this point: Events with more than 1000 visitors were allowed from October 1 with the approval of the canton. The only one so far has been the FC Aarau game last Saturday with a good 2000 spectators.
New: Events with more than 50 visitors are prohibited in the future. This number does not include, for example, venue personnel, athletes at competitions, and performers at performances.
Contact and team sports
Up to this point: In Aargau, training and games in sports such as football, handball or ice hockey are allowed with protection concepts from the clubs and system operators. In other cantons (for example, Bern, Valais) these types of sports have been prohibited for some days, with the exception of the professional area.
New: Contact sports are prohibited, other indoor sports activities with up to 15 people are allowed, provided distance is maintained and masks are worn. In large rooms, such as tennis courts, it is not necessary to wear masks, outside only keep your distance. The rules do not apply to children under the age of 16, training and competition in professional sports is allowed.
Cultural business
Up to this point: So far there have been no restrictions beyond the general distance rules and the indoor mask requirement. Museums and galleries had to develop and follow a concept of protection.
New: Cultural leisure activities are allowed indoors with a mask and sufficient space. Since a large number of drops are emitted when singing, amateur choir events are prohibited. Rehearsals and performances are still allowed in the professional cultural sector. Museums and galleries can remain open with a protection concept.
Fines for violations of crown rules
Up to this point: Until now, the police have not been able to penalize people who do not wear masks with a fine. The canton requested it in its declaration to the federal government. Reason: A sanction order that comes into effect later has no deterrent effect.
New: The federal government does not respond to the canton’s request to introduce fines for violations of the mask requirement. Only those who organize events with more than 50 people are fined
