Fight against Swiss bonuses, the elderly don’t want to die in hospital – the Sunday press on Corona
The rapidly declining mobility in Switzerland after the latest Corona measures, the increasing radicalization of Corona deniers and a special winter season. Sunday papers write about the coronavirus about this and more.
Mobility is decreasing
Mobility in Switzerland has already declined significantly since mid-week due to tighter measures to contain the corona pandemic. This is demonstrated by the mobility data of the Intervista company, which is available in the “SonntagsZeitung”. While the Swiss covered about 20 kilometers a day in mid-October, the average daily distance last Friday was 13.9 kilometers.

The slowdown has intensified significantly after the cantons announced they would cancel major events and the Federal Council limited public events to 50 people and closed clubs and discos on Wednesday. Experts hope this will have a quick impact on the number of cases.
SP and SVP want to take action against Swiss bonuses
The two parties, SVP and SP, want to prevent the top managers of Swiss airline from paying the bonuses. According to the “SonntagsZeitung”, the National Councilor of the SP, Céline Widmer, and the National Councilor of the SP, Lars Guggisberg, will request at the next meeting of the finance commission that the state government prohibits the transfer of bonuses.

With a decision by the Finance Commission at the back, the Federal Council must increase the pressure on the Swiss leadership, Guggisberg said. Swiss is deeply in debt to Swiss taxpayers. The SP wants to go one step further. It demands that no company that is supported in any way by the state during the Crown crisis can distribute bonuses.
The risk list served more than the psychological effect
Despite the few benefits, the federal government quarantined people who had entered Switzerland from high-risk countries for ten days starting in July. Tens of thousands of travelers were affected. The federal government’s approach was less aimed at containing the corona pandemic in Switzerland.
Rather, the quarantine also had the desired effect of fewer people traveling to risk areas, quoted the “NZZ am Sonntag,” a representative from the Federal Office of Public Health. Therefore, it was not about the effect of the measure, but also about the psychological objective. The FDP Council of States, Andrea Caroni, described it as scandalous that the federal government nonetheless adhered to the quarantine obligation.
Crown deniers are radicalizing
Deniers of the crown pandemic are becoming increasingly radical. In the chats of those who oppose measures to contain the coronavirus, more and more threats appear. The Federal Police Office (Fedpol) takes development very seriously, according to the “SonntagsBlick”.

The development is worrying, Fedpol spokesman Florian Näf said. And further: “The growing propensity for violence on the part of the crown deniers scene worries us greatly.” The threats were directed against exposed bodies such as the Federal Office of Public Health and against politicians who are at the fore in the fight against the pandemic. According to Näf, protection measures for individuals had to be reinforced in recent months. In cooperation with the cantonal police, the federal government makes speeches to deal with potential criminals.
Mask requirement at ski lifts
Before the start of the new ski season, cable car companies improved their protection concept to combat the corona pandemic. In accordance with the new concept that the umbrella ropeway association has sent to its members and which is available to the “SonntagsZeitung”, the mask requirement applies to all lifts, including chair lifts and surface lifts.

In a previous version, this duty was only prescribed in closed channels. Recently, winter sports enthusiasts have to wear mouth and nose protection not only in closed waiting rooms, but also outside when queuing.
Schools cling to ski camps
Cantons and individual schools are sticking to the implementation of ski camps despite the rapidly growing number of coronavirus cases. There are currently 159 snow sports camps booked for next winter through the Swiss snow sports initiative GoSnow, according to the “SonntagsZeitung”. The non-profit organization was founded by the federal government, the cantons and sports representatives and supports schools and teachers in organizing class camps.
But warehouses are also feeling the effects of tightening crown measures. In the past few days, 83 camps with nearly 5,000 people on GoSnow were canceled. The camp organizers criticize the bans. Class camps may be safer than normal school operations.
The elderly do not want to go to the hospital
If the number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units increases dramatically, doctors will soon have to decide who should be saved. If beds are occupied, people over the age of 85 should only receive palliative treatment. But not all older people want to be hospitalized if they are infected with the coronavirus; especially those who live in nursing homes.
This is demonstrated by a survey carried out by “SonntagsBlick” in 18 cantons. Only about half of Covid 19 deaths died from the disease in hospital. In fact, according to the newspaper “SonntagsZeitung”, the elderly do not usually want to go to intensive care.
Berset wanted to have to work from home
The head office is a cornerstone in the fight against the corona pandemic. Last Wednesday, the Federal Council explicitly recommended going back to working with screens at home. As the “SonntagsBlick” research shows, Health Minister Alain Berset had even requested that the home office be not only recommended, but also mandatory where possible.
If Berset had prevailed, this would have had important legal consequences. The position of the employees would have been strengthened in some disputes. The Federal Council avoided it and rejected the request.
Berset attracts the population
Federal Councilor Alain Berset has once again called on Swiss citizens to take responsibility for themselves in the crown pandemic. The crisis cannot be overcome with blockades alone. He needs the support of the population, Berset said in an interview with the French-speaking Swiss Sunday newspaper “Le Matin Dimanche.”
He understands the latest criticism that the Federal Council has weighed the interests of the economy more than those of health. However, he cautioned against wrong conclusions. If the crisis taught anything, it was that the economy and health should not confront each other. For politicians, the use of hospitals with patients with Covid-19 is currently the central theme of any new measure against the pandemic. (jaw / sda)
