In Valais, the number of infected people tends to decline again. There is hope that the measures will work.
The canton of Valais has the highest number of corona-infected people relative to its population. When it comes to coping with the Corona crisis, the mountain canton is therefore practically a model canton for Switzerland. It was the first canton to take extremely restrictive measures.
Now the number of new infections in Valais is decreasing. While around 800 new corona cases were reported per day early last week, an average of 630 infections were recorded between Friday and Sunday, that is, a fifth less.
Just a preliminary trend
Valais health director Esther Waeber-Kalbermatten notes that the crown’s restrictive measures, which have been in place for ten days, appear to be working. «At the weekend we have a marked decline. But it’s only three days, ”he puts into perspective at the same time. “If this trend continues, we can say that the measurements were correct. That’s good, but it’s a preliminary trend. “
Crown measures in Valais are stricter than those of the Federal Council. For example, visits to nursing homes and hospitals are prohibited and the mask is mandatory even in high school. Now these measures seem to be working slowly.
“Increase the number of intensive care beds”
And yet the Valais health director expects an increase in the number of patients. This is because hospital admissions are often delayed. “We expect the situation to become more tense at the end of the week. That is why the hospital will increase the number of intensive care beds, ”explains Waeber-Kalbermatten.
There are currently around 250 corona patients in a hospital in Valais. Even if this number will rise for the time being, the Valais health director is cautiously optimistic. The knot in the curve of new infections offers hope.
