The crown crisis is having an impact on aviation. In April 2020, 26,913 passengers flew through the Zurich airport. This corresponds to less than 99 percent compared to the same period last year. The last time so few passengers traveled through the Zurich airport on average per month in 1952, four years after flight operations began.
The number of local passengers fell 98.9 percent to 20,866 in April 2020. The proportion of transferred passengers was 11.9% (-16.4 percentage points compared to the previous year) and the number of transferred passengers decreased 99.6% to 2,812.
Only 37 passengers per plane
The number of flight movements decreased 91.7 percent year-on-year until takeoffs or landings in 1921. With 37 passengers, the average number of passengers per flight was 71.9 percent below the previous year’s level. Seat occupancy fell 59.9 percentage points to 20.1 percent.
It also doesn’t look much better with charging. A total of 12,177 tons of cargo were handled at the Zurich airport in April. This corresponds to a decrease of 67.5 percent compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of pure cargo flights increased by 234 flight movements compared to April 2019 to a total of 256 takeoffs or landings.
May should be just as bad
The outlook remains bleak: “In May 2020, the number of flight movements and the number of passengers is likely to be at a similarly low level as in April 2020,” says a statement.
