Canton Vaud is the crown-troubled child of Switzerland. Therefore, protection measures in the canton of western Switzerland will be tightened as of Thursday afternoon. Vaud was forced to act, as admits the director of Health of SP, Rebecca Ruiz (38): “Faced with the curve that does not stop rising, now we must take measures.”
Furthermore, the Vaudois government wants to prevent its canton from becoming a forbidden area; this would be fatal for tourism in particular. But the delicate situation of the crown in Röstigraben is increasingly noticeable abroad: Germany is currently warning against travel to the cantons, Geneva, Vaud and Freiburg.
Things get even worse for Vaud: the canton, like the canton of Friborg before, is on Belgium’s travel ban list. According to the Belgian Foreign Ministry, this means with immediate effect: “Currently it is not possible or not allowed to travel.” There is still a short grace period for returnees and tourists until Friday at 4 p.m.: Only those who enter from this point in time should be quarantined and have a corona test.
Eleven cantons on the orange list
The orange risk list has also increased again: with Aargau, Jura and Wallis, three more cantons can be found on it. The orange warning level applies to eleven cantons:
- Aargau
- Basel city
- Bern
- Geneva
- Swear
- Neuenburg
- Schwyz
- Solothurn
- Wallis
- Zug
- Zürich
For these, “increased vigilance” applies: a quarantine or crown test is recommended upon return, but not mandatory. The kingdom gives the green light to the remaining 13 cantons.
Up and down since July
For weeks, the Belgians have been pushing local cantons back and forth on their own risk list. Up to 16 cantons were on the warning list.
The ups and downs on the Belgian crown’s list began in July: At that time, the Brussels authorities put the French-speaking cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais on the red list and banned non-mandatory stays in the Lake Geneva region. FDP Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (59) then intervened in Brussels, after which Vaud and Valais were removed from the list. Geneva and Valais are already back on the orange list, while Vaud is on the red list.
