US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania contracted the corona virus. “We will begin our quarantine and recovery immediately. We will get through it TOGETHER, ”Trump wrote on Friday night (local time) on Twitter. The United States is in the final stretch of the November 3 election, in which Trump is running for a second term.
Trump confirmed in an interview with Fox News on Thursday night (local time) that Hope Hicks was infected. “It tested positive,” Trump said. “We spent a lot of time with her.” Trump hopes to get his result later that night or on Friday morning. “In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process,” the 74-year-old wrote on Twitter after the interview.
There have been corona infections in the vicinity of Trump. However, Hicks is the closest person to the president who is known to be infected. According to coinciding media reports, Hicks flew to Cleveland with Trump on Tuesday on the Air Force One presidential plane for the televised debate, where Trump met with his Democratic challenger Joe Biden. On Wednesday, he traveled to Minnesota for an election campaign appearance.
Trump suggested that Hicks could have been infected by members of the military or police. “They come to you and they want to hug you and kiss you because we did a very good job for them, you get close and things happen,” Trump said. “I was surprised to hear about Hope, but he’s a very loving person to you and he knows there is a risk, but he’s young.” You couldn’t just say, “Stay away, stay away,” Trump said.
The White House initially made no changes to the president’s schedule for Friday. Prior to a late night Florida election campaign appearance (local time), a midday phone call is planned with seniors who are particularly at risk from the Corona crisis.
In Wednesday’s photos, Hicks was seen at Joint Base Andrews military airfield outside the Marine One presidential helicopter in the vicinity of Trump’s adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner. Neither of them wore mouth and nose protection.

A White House spokesman, Judd Deere, said on request Thursday night: “The president takes the health and safety of himself and all who work for him and the American people very seriously.” Both when traveling and at the White House, current CDC health authority guidelines and proven measures are followed to reduce the risk of infection, the statement said.
Trump does not generally wear a mask in public. The White House justified this with the fact that the president and his entourage were regularly tested for the corona virus. Trump’s spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany described wearing the masks in June as a “personal decision” and noted that she would be tested regularly.

White House employees knew that Hicks had been infected since Wednesday night, the New York Times reported. Bloomberg reported that she was not doing well in Minnesota and was quarantined on Air Force One during the return flight.
In early May, it emerged that US Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, Katie Miller, had been infected. In late July, White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien tested positive.
