The cross-country ski world cup will take place in Davos on the weekend. Many Swiss are there, but other nations are missing.

The hopes of the Swiss cross country fans at the World Cup at home in Davos mainly rest with sprinters Jovian Hediger and Nadine Fähndrich. The absence of the Scandinavians is still a topic of conversation.

Swiss men’s coach Kein Einaste commented dryly on the lack of Norwegians, Swedes and Finns: “The best nation is at the beginning.” Query: The Russians? “No, Switzerland,” said the new strong man among Swiss cross-country skiers. Of course, you know that this is not really true. But Einaste also says: “The lack of some important nations is an opportunity for new stars.”

In Davos, therefore, eight of the twelve runners on the podium at the opening of the World Cup two weeks ago in Kuusamo, Finland, are missing for men and ten for women.

Jovian Hediger finished sixth in the first classic sprint, behind four Norwegians and Russian World Cup winner Alexander Bolschunow.

It wasn’t the goal to be in top shape right now, but I’m a bit far off.

Question mark for Dario Cologna

Dario Cologna, who convinced last year with 3rd place in 15 km, does not count even once. Its shape is geared towards the February World Cup. “It was not the goal to be in top form now, but I am a bit far off,” admitted the four-time Olympic champion.

In Kuusamo, Cologna was ranked 38th, 29th and 30th. “A lot would have to happen to get a very good result,” the Grisons native is realistic. “It is more important that you take a step in the right direction and that the feeling is better than in recent weekends.”
