A shopping mall in Aargau causes outrage with an anniversary celebration. The images show people close together, some without a mask. The managing director speaks of a “snapshot” and admits mistakes.
The Shoppi Tivoli is marketed as a “bastion of fashion, beauty and lifestyle”. But the Spreitenbach shopping center could soon become a bastion for something else: Corona.
The Spreitenbach shopping center celebrates its 50th anniversary since Thursday: with children’s choir, cotton candy, cake and: discounts. On Saturday, people flocked to the celebration. The highlight was a discount battle – a large table bomb spat out confetti and table tennis balls with discount tickets. Customers forgot each other and Corona’s second wave and huddled around the discount pump together in hopes of getting a percentage. Many wore a mask, but some did not wear it or did not wear it correctly. Keeping your distance: no trace

The mall has been engulfed in a storm of outrage on social media. There is talk of “mindless idiots” and “Covid for sale”. The organizers have not taken responsibility, it is said. The Shoppi Tivoli wanted to advertise with the anniversary celebration and boost sales. The shot backfired correctly.
Shoppi Tivoli managing director Patrick Stäuble commented on the allegations to the NZZ on Sunday. It says: “The image is a snapshot.”
The Tivoli shopping center would have liked to celebrate its 50th anniversary in March of this year. The celebration had to be canceled by Corona. Tivoli management set a replacement date in October and was overwhelmed by the dynamism of the virus. “We had to decide six weeks ago whether we would go ahead with the anniversary,” says Managing Director Stäuble. “At that time, the situation of the crown was completely different.”
Despite the worsening of the situation, in the last two weeks it was assumed that the concept of protection was sufficient. According to Stäuble, the Tivoli had fifteen staff on duty, distributing disinfectants and signaling the need for a mask. Keeping your distance also worked for the most part, Stäuble said. “Aside from the tabletop bomb with the discounts, people were much less close.” Also keep in mind that it only took four to five minutes to fall below this distance.
Managing Director Stäuble admits that the discount table pump “was not the best idea.” He still considers the implementation of the anniversary justifiable. “Retail has never been a problem in recent weeks. The infections occurred mainly in private. “
In Aargau that could change in the coming days.
