The health minister is in top form in the Corona crisis. Even his political opponents recognize him. A picture
Alain Berset’s high-altitude flight began with a lapse: at one of the first press conferences on the coronavirus in early March, the Minister of Health explained how important it was to keep a distance and not shake hands.
After his appearance, everyone was shocked to see Federal Councilman Berset shaking hands with the President of the Conference of Health Directors! One wrong move, Berset admitted the next opportunity.
But since then, the 48-year-old man from Freiburg no longer has any mistakes: he acts with confidence and competence, he communicates with charm in two languages. It leads the country through the crown crisis and also delivers serious messages with the right combination of emphasis and sensitivity.
He also conforms to the SP Federal Council that walks incognito through the old town of Bern to get an idea of whether the population is following the measures. It is clear that the crisis is extremely demanding. He stayed in Bern for weeks and never saw his wife and three children until Easter.
His leadership skills are also recognized by the other parties. CVP President Gerhard Pfister says: “In my opinion, Alain Berset is the right man in the right place at the right time. It does its job very well.
But of course there are also criticisms: the SVP criticizes, for example, that Switzerland was not sufficiently prepared for the pandemic with very few protective masks and disinfectants. “That should not have happened in Switzerland,” says party president Albert Rösti. The Italian border was also closed too late, which had promoted the spread of the virus.
Political winner of the crisis.
The SVP and FDP also praise his appearances as crisis manager. Right now, a Federal Council is in the foreground, which has long been said to have yet to establish any major involvement in his many years in office. The lowest point of his career as Minister of Health was the no vote for his reform package “Pension 2020 2020” in autumn 2017.
The current crown crisis offers him an opportunity to distinguish himself, says FDP President Petra Gössi: “It also gives him air in all the other files that seem blocked. I think Berset will come out stronger from him.
Instead of dealing with healthcare costs and pension funds, she is currently facing the corona virus. He is exactly where he prefers to be, as he said in an interview ten years ago, namely: “Being where you can influence to achieve your goals.”
Even if there is a time after the corona virus, for the moment its current mantra applies: «Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands. You should never forget that! »
