The appointment of Health Minister Alain Berset (48) with cantonal health directors on Thursday was set for a long time. Observers are not surprised that Berset and chief health officer Lukas Engelberger (45) have not announced anything tangible.
Federal President Simonetta Sommaruga (60) has long taken the lead in the fight against Corona. It was Berset’s colleague who called the emergency meeting last Sunday and made sure the cantons were consulted.
Thanks to Sommaruga, the state government was able to pass the resolutions that will act against the second wave. And thanks to her, more far-reaching government decisions are likely to be made on Wednesday.
Without a plan
But what about the Minister of Health? “Berset does not have any plans”, hence the harsh judgment that another member of the Federal Council is recently issuing. And the cantons also criticize the crisis management of the Francophone region as barely existing.
But it has also become more difficult for Berset and his people. Since the departure of Daniel Koch (65), things have not been easy at the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). A new “Mr. Corona” was not found. The BAG is now reporting to many voices, but it is unclear.
And the pressure on BAG officials is enormous. The large number of concerned citizens who made their way to the office is particularly stressful. “Including weirdos” who did not flinch from threats, as politicians report.
Mixed party fronts
Berset likes to keep his head in the cameras, but without a cook he doesn’t have the strength to act against the pandemic. The cantons are closer anyway, depending on their attitude. You should fix it. It is different with Sommaruga, who does not seem so eloquent when it comes to appearing, but is very effective in obtaining decisions from the Federal Council.
Therefore, the pandemic has also confused the party fronts. The government councilors of the vice presidency praise Sommaruga’s commitment. And the SP government advisers navigate the SVP course of Ueli Maurer (69), who prefers to do nothing. Currently, many things are uncertain. One thing is clear: the iron road leads to the Valais CVP. Like the president of the Council of State, Christophe Darbellay (49), Defense Minister Viola Amherd (58) also wants to take tough measures.
The music plays elsewhere
Meanwhile, the leisure pianist Berset has to see music elsewhere. Concert pianist Sommaruga sets the tone. If Berset had hoped to limit himself to the role of passive member of the Federal Council, he failed on Friday. Because Zurich, the most populous canton with high crown numbers, does not act, the Federal Council has to tighten the screw on Wednesday. Berset will appear again in the media, but perhaps only to accompany Sommaruga.
