For many, corona vaccines represent the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. A billion dollar business is made on vaccines. The Federal Police now warn Fedpol of illegal activities related to vaccines.
The pandemic has been a lucrative business for criminals since it began, SRF reports. “It can be assumed that the production, distribution, storage or administration of Covid vaccines also offers a number of new possibilities for criminal acts,” says Florian Näf, media spokesman for the Federal Police Office Fedpol.
These machinations are likely to take place in Switzerland as well. Currently, the focus is on supply chains.
The authorities want to prevent theft
“Criminals could try to get real vaccination doses,” Näf said. “But there is also the risk of counterfeit Covid vaccines being released.”
That is why the Swiss authorities have taken numerous preventive security measures: In the first phase, the army will be responsible for supplying the vaccine. Vaccines are shipped directly from factories to secret locations. From there, the cans are then distributed to the cantons.
Criminals, meanwhile, will try to sell diverted or even falsified doses of vaccines online, just as they do with other drugs, depending on the prognosis. Fedpol is already looking at such examples. “Fraudulent offers are already being made in relation to the Covid-19 vaccine,” Näf said.
Criminals also want to get money from phone calls. For example, they promise early vaccinations with an upfront payment. There are similar attempts at fraud on the Internet, authorities warn. The federal government emphasizes: The Covid vaccine will be free for everyone.
