Dortmund against Schalke, the Revierderby, also known as “the mother of all derbies”, has always electrified the masses. “Bluewin” recalls some of the best moments before Saturday’s game.
When Dortmund and Schalke meet, there is a state of emergency in the Ruhr area. In the Bundesliga alone, the two archrivals have met 96 times since 1963. Dortmund won 34 times, lost 32 times and points were shared 30 times.
Forecasts are mostly useless, because looking at the chart is a bad indicator. The Revierderby stands out on its own. Everything is always possible. It remains to be seen if this will also be the case this Saturday when the game is played in front of empty stands. The last game in May, which also took place without spectators, gives hope for many goals: Dortmund won 4-0 at the time. “Blue Sport” recalls six unforgettable district derbies.
September 6, 1969: dog bite to rear
Schalke took a 1-0 lead at Dortmund in the first half, when numerous overjoyed guest fans stormed the turf and created a chaotic situation. Butlers intervene with their German Shepherds and bite. Two Schalke players, Friedel Rausch (Po) and Gerd Neuser (back of the knee), who have since passed away, are also bitten. For the latter, the scandalous game that was supposed to end 1: 1 was over. Poisoning continues after tetanus vaccination. When asked what would have happened if the dog had bitten him head on, he said years later in “Current Sports Studio”: “Then he would have bit his teeth!” The scar at the bottom is “a forever memory” because it has never completely disappeared.
Of course, Kiko and Florian Künzi did not miss these scenes from the show “A Ball for Two” (see video above).
December 19, 1997: goalkeeper goal by Jens Lehmann
Schalke goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who also stormed up front, scores from a corner that shouldn’t have been in injury time with a header to tie. It is the first goal by a goalkeeper in the Bundesliga offside. A few years later, Lehmann commits high treason and hires in Dortmund.
May 12, 2007: The sweetest Derby win, also thanks to Alex Frei
Dortmund play a season to forget. When Leader Schalke is invited on the penultimate day of the match, it is already clear that BVB will miss out on European business. There is only one goal left: to ruin the championship for Schalke, and this is exactly how it should end. Thanks to goals from Alex Frei and Ebi Smolarek, Dortmund won 2-0, Stuttgart replaced Schalke as the leader before the final matchday. A week later, the two Swiss Marco Streller and Ludovic Magnin can lift the championship cup: Schalke become runners-up.
September 13, 2008: The referee “gives” two goals to Frei
Referee Lutz Wagner is said to have gone back to watching the entire match in the locker room after the final whistle, because he will have to ask himself critical questions. What happened? Schalke leads 3-0 when the referee slips the game out of hand. Christian Pander and Fabian Ernst fly off the pitch, Alex Frei’s 2: 3 is an offside goal and the penalty that Derby-Schreck Frei, who was substituted at half-time (prepared 3: 3), would have converted at the final score of 3: 3 it is not allowed to exist.
Frei had played against Schalke five times in his career, scoring four goals and setting up three more. Only in his last appearance could he not be included in the scorers list. Personally, the rival suited him well, but of the five games that resulted in two losses and two draws only one victory.
Nov 25, 2017 – Biggest comeback in Derby history
After 25 minutes it is 4-0 for Dortmund, the fans are already dreaming of a historical humiliation of the archrival. But after conceding the first goal in the 61st minute, BVB broke down. After two more goals (65th and 86th) it comes as it should. In the 95th minute, Naldo heads the ball into the net after a perfectly taken corner, the draw is a fact. Many media later write about the “Derby of the Century.”
April 27, 2019: Embolo delivers the coup de grace to Dortmund
In the crazy 4: 4, Embolo sat on the bench, the then Schalke striker missed three more games injured, once again he was not in the squad. But a year and a half ago another crazy derby came to an end. Embolo takes the penalty to 1: 1 and shortly before the end he puts the lid with the goal to 4: 2. In the middle, two Dortmunders fly off the field and yet it is exciting again: Akanji leads the connecting goal to 2: 3 in an outnumbered double. The unfortunate Roman Bürki is powerless on all strokes.
For Dortmund, however, it was much more than “just” a defeat in the derby, because before this fourth final matchday, BVB was just one point behind leaders Bayern Munich, who played only 1-1 the next day. For Schalke, on the other hand, it was an important victory in the fight against relegation.
