Costly mask deal: Switzerland paid millions for useless masks

Young entrepreneurs in Zurich sold 700,000 supposedly counterfeit respiratory masks to the army pharmacy. Part of it has already been destroyed.

When the first corona wave swept through Europe in the spring of 2020, governments panicked. From Berlin to Bern to Madrid – everyone had very few protective masks for health care and population in stock. A gray market with dubious and uncertified products emerged in a few weeks. The “criminal gangs” were up to the task, as reported by the Europol police authority in March.

Investigation now shows that the Swiss military has also purchased counterfeit FFP2 respirators on a large scale. The masks were partially mold-infested and otherwise of poor quality, so many of them had already been destroyed. However, the Confederation has not received any compensation from the supplier.
