Corona has killed more than 900,000 people around the world so far. In terms of population, nowhere were there as many as in Peru. In the South American country, 94.86 people died from the virus for every 100,000 inhabitants. One problem with the place is that despite the curfew, people cannot stay home.
About 70 percent of the workforce works in the informal sector, an area whose activities do not appear in any official statistics. For example, this includes people who sell products on the street. If they do not want to starve, they must come into contact with people and thus expose themselves to the risk of infection. Now the government of Peru has once again tightened the rules: there is a full curfew on Sundays, family gatherings are initially prohibited.
Belgium way ahead, due to a different counting method?
If the measures work, Belgium could soon top this inglorious ranking. So far, the country has had 86.84 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. However, this is likely also due to the fact that Belgium also counted suspected corona deaths at the start of the pandemic. For example, people who died in a retirement home where other people have already succumbed to the coronavirus.
They are followed by Great Britain, Spain and Chile. Only countries with more than 100,000 inhabitants were considered for the list. Switzerland ranks 26th.

Different counting methods
Deaths from corona are recorded differently across countries. In Switzerland, the BAG receives a message from doctors that a person has died from the coronavirus and reports the case. So if someone dies at home or in a retirement home and has never taken the test, that person does not count towards the statistics. The measurement method in England was very special: Until August, everyone who tested positive for the virus was counted as a corona death there, even if they died in a car accident weeks later. Now only those who die from the virus within 28 days of a positive diagnosis are counted. (vof)
