So far, the second can is injected three to four weeks after the first corona vaccination in Switzerland. This is what the vaccination plan of the Federal Office of Public Health offers. Now, however, Christian Münz, head of the group of experts in immunology of the Covid working group, proposes a change: the second dose should be administered around three months after the first, informs the “Rundschau” in advance.
This could allow many more people to get their first vaccine, which may make sense given the current vaccine shortage. In the UK, the exact same thing is currently being done, also waiting three months between the two vaccinations.
The idea is likely to meet resistance
Studies have shown that the basic protection of the first vaccine lasts up to three months, says Münz. His opinion: “Now you should vaccinate as many people as possible with a first dose.” If you wait longer with the second dose, twice as many people could be vaccinated at one time, Münz said.
Corona’s task force announced on Twitter Thursday that this representation “is not an official position of the independent task force.” The working group will soon release an official statement.
However, it will be difficult to convince politicians of the idea. On Tuesday, Christoph Berger, chairman of the Federal Commission on Immunization Affairs, rejected the idea. Among other things, he expressed concern that gaps in vaccination protection could arise. (vof)
