The Federal Office of Public Health reports new figures on the spread of the coronavirus every day. At least Monday through Friday. But also how many people died. “Too many deaths” are the cause of the coronavirus, Alain Berset repeatedly complained at press conferences. Bloss: You can’t even know the actual number of deaths per crown; at best, you can guess excess mortality.
This was recently cleared up by the 29-year-old from Zurich, who appeared in the Federal Office of Public Health’s death-by-crown statistics from December 21-27.
While the BAG confirmed that one person died with the coronavirus during this time, the canton of Zurich immediately contradicted it. Although the deceased actually had the corona virus, it can be ruled out that he died from it. However, even after this clarification, it will not disappear from the BAG statistics.
“Cause of death unknown”
Why? Compared to “20 Minuten”, BAG spokeswoman Katrin Holenstein explains: “BAG does not know the cause of death.” There is no information on cause of death on the report form for clinical findings of a death. “There is only one note that he was a Covid patient.” Doctors would have to report it to the BAG. And then it appeared as deaths in the crown statistics.
In short: Holenstein confirms that today no one can know how many people in Switzerland actually died from the corona virus.
However, there was a statistically proven excess mortality in Switzerland in Corona 2020. According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 6,500 more people will have died by the end of December than the long-term average. This excess mortality also exceeded the years 2013 and 2015, when violent waves of flu caused more deaths than normal.
“Just an epidemiological statistic”
The question that remains open is why the BAG maintains statistics of deaths by corona if the office is not clear as to what the “killed by corona” actually died from. Here, too, Holenstein makes it clear: these statistics are “epidemiological statistics.” If a patient who tested positive for the corona virus dies, the FOPH knows there is a less active case.
However, the BAG does not activate this important classification, as can be seen on the home page. It is written across the death tape – it creates the strong impression that the Federal Office really knows how many people have died from the coronavirus.
