Coronavirus: now the Solino nursing home in Bütschwil is also affected +++ 17 people have died in the nursing home in Uzwil
Meanwhile, a third house in the Wil-Toggenburg region has been badly affected. There were also outbreaks at other Thurvita AG facilities in Wil.
The crown numbers in Toggenburg are actually falling again. But now, of all time, there is an outbreak in a nursing home in the region: at the Solino senior center in Bütschwil. The first test from a resident on Wednesday was positive.
Since then, the number of infected people has risen to seven, and the nursing home suspects that another five residents may have been infected because they have symptoms. Currently, no one can estimate whether the nearly 100 residents were infected more. “The dynamics of Corona are difficult to predict,” says Markus Brändle. He is the director of the senior center. There are still no signs to give the go-ahead.
There are no visits until the end of November.
To defuse the situation, the Solino has now ordered a “strict but limited lockdown”, as Brändle puts it. Those who tested positive are isolated. Anyone who has had contact with an infected person but has no symptoms is in quarantine. There is a general ban on visiting the Solino until November 30. However, with exceptions, for example for registered visitors in the protected visitor area or in special situations.
It is notable that there are currently more employees than residents infected. So far, the test has been positive in 14 of 130 employees. However, according to Brändle, there is no evidence that the virus entered the house through them. He says:
“We have always taken all protective measures.”
There are still no difficult routes on the Solino, there have been no deaths so far.
17 dead, two in critical condition in Uzwil
The situation is different in the Uzwil senior center. 17 people have died there in the last three weeks. There was a serious crown outbreak in early November. A total of more than 60 people were infected in the two locations of Sonnmatt and Marienfried.
Currently, 20 residents are still sick with the virus, as Uzwil Mayor Lucas Keel says. He is also the president of the Home Commission. Two of these 20 people are in critical condition.
According to Keel, the fact that so many people died at home is due to the fact that the Uzwil Senior Center is a care facility. He says:
“Most of our people were already in poor health before the corona outbreak.”
They did not die, but with the virus.
On the way to normal operation
Visits to the senior center are still prohibited and normality has not yet returned. But one is on the way back to normal operations, Keel says. “The peak has been exceeded.” In wards that no longer have positive cases, residents can move freely again. How the virus entered the home is unknown. Quilla says:
“We don’t suspect anyone and we don’t want to pillory anyone.”
A crown outbreak often hits residents hard. But not only them. Family members also often go through difficult times. “It wasn’t easy for them that they were no longer allowed to visit residents,” Keel says. “But we had to put the protective interests of the community before individual interests.”
Nine people died at the Sonnenhof
There were also more deaths at the Sonnenhof retirement center in Wil. Nine people have died there because of Corona. This was announced by Thurvita, the operator of the Sonnenhof, on Friday. Four weeks ago there was a serious outbreak at the retirement center. Overall, a third of the residents were infected. According to Thurvita, most of those infected are recovering well.
In the meantime, however, there have also been cases of corona at other Thurvita facilities, at the Fürstenau care center and at the Bergholz care apartment. So far, there have been a total of 72 infections among Thurvita residents, the message continues. Another was added to the nine deaths at the Sonnenhof.
