Italy tightened restrictions on the crown from Christmas until early January. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte (56) announced on Friday night. From December 24 to January 6, a blockade (red zone) is applied in the Mediterranean country during the holidays and before. Only in four days the country returned to a partial blockade (orange zone).
For the people of the country with about 60 million inhabitants, the red zone means closed shops, bars and restaurants. Stores for daily necessities, such as supermarkets and pharmacies, are open. You can also sell take out food. People can only leave home under certain conditions, for example to go to work or to the doctor; play sports alone or do necessary things like shopping.
Travel between regions is prohibited. Visits to friends or parents are only allowed in pairs during the day. Children under the age of 14 are not included.
Veneto particularly strict rules
The orange zone rules will apply on December 28, 29 and 30 and January 4. Stores reopen, but bars and restaurants remain closed, except for take-out sales. People can move freely again within municipalities.
Before the decision, the northeast region of Veneto had already adopted stricter rules. As of Saturday, traffic between communities should not be allowed after 2:00 p.m., except for work or health reasons. Ligurian President Giovanni Toti (52) described the changes to the Crown’s rules in a few days during Christmas in the run-up to Conte’s decision as “unfair.” In Liguria, the curve for new infections is constantly downward.
The third wave must be prevented
Earlier this month, the government had already introduced stricter rules for the period between Christmas and New Years. Ski areas were closed until the beginning of January, travel was restricted as of December 21, and a quarantine was decided for travelers from abroad.
With the rules, the government of Rome wants to prevent more people from contracting the corona virus again, for example, at large family celebrations at Christmas. This should also prevent a third wave early next year.
The pandemic tends to weaken in Italy
Italy was hit hard by the corona pandemic. On Friday, authorities reported nearly 18,000 new infections and around 670 people who died from the coronavirus in one day. According to the Health Ministry, more than 67,000 people have died from Sars-CoV-2 since the start of the pandemic and more than 1.9 million infections have been recorded. More recently, the number of new infections had gradually decreased.
However, experts from the Ministry of Health are still concerned about the high number of deaths and people in intensive care units. The reproductive value, which indicates how many people an infected person infects on average, was below one according to the latest findings, a sign that the pandemic is weakening. (SDA)
