The Federal Council seeks contact with the cantons in the Corona crisis. After trips to Ticino, Lucerne and Valais, the Minister of Health, Alain Berset (48), was much lower today: he visited the Canton of Bern.
There he met employees of the Inselspital and they gave him a guided tour of the laboratory. He also exchanged ideas with employees of Spitex Köniz. Another topic on the agenda was a discussion with the Bern government.
“I’m not sure what’s to come”
At the subsequent press conference, Berset took the opportunity to take stock, after a five-week state of emergency. As usual, the Minister of Health was cautiously optimistic, but praised the population. She “understood very well what we do and why we do it together,” Berset said. Despite the fantastic weather during Easter, the rules were followed. But Berset also emphasized: “Now it is not clear what will come.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Christoph Ammann (51, SP) hoped that Switzerland “will emerge from the crisis well under the leadership of the Federal Council and in close cooperation between the federal government and the cantons.” In any case, the Berne government assured the Federal Council of full support.
There could be relaxation for hospitals.
In addition to District President Ammann and Federal Councilor Berset, Health Minister Pierre Alain Schnegg (57, Senior Vice President) was also present at the press conference. Among other things, he summarized the current difficult situation in the canton. Only about half of hospital beds are currently occupied. The reason for this is that the federal government banned non-urgent interventions during the crown crisis. At the same time, the canton has greatly expanded the capacity of beds to be prepared for emergencies.
When asked about this situation, Schnegg said it is better to have too many beds than not enough. Berset announced that a relaxation in this area would be examined as part of the ongoing discussions. But you have to be careful. “It’s a tightrope walk,” said Berset. The health minister made it clear that he wanted to avoid a new wave of infection due to premature relaxation. (lha)
