Donald Trump has a Crown and many are wondering: Will that increase his poll numbers? A glance at the British island shows that a sick head of government receives sympathy, but this may be short-lived.
Like Donald Trump, Boris Johnson tended to take the virus lightly prior to infection. Johnson’s statement after visiting a hospital made news: “I was in the hospital, there were some patients with crowns. I shook hands with everyone. I continue to shake hands with everyone.”
When he got infected himself a few weeks later, there were requests for enhancement from left to right. But behind closed doors, some people might think: That serves them well. Boris Johnson communicated initially by video, like Trump, and was emphatically calm, had only mild symptoms and: “Now I work from home.”
Admitted after ten days
But no one can predict the course of the disease. Some of Johnson’s co-workers who had also contracted the disease quickly recovered. But not the Prime Minister himself: after ten days he was admitted to the hospital. Downing Street tried to calm down, saying it was just a check. But a day later he was in the intensive care unit and feared for his life.
Compassion in the population
At this point, the mood of the British population changed markedly. Many citizens wrote on social media that they opposed his policies but wished him a speedy recovery. Comedian Jonathan Pie summed it up with British humor: “It doesn’t feel good to call him a bastard while he’s sick, so please get well soon.”
Johnson’s ratings went up. But that did not last long. Because Johnson’s long illness meant that he was unable to continue the political business, important decisions were left behind.
Survey results are falling again
The British prime minister took the virus much more seriously after his illness. However, Johnson’s popularity ratings have fallen since then, because he continues to make embarrassing mistakes in dealing with the crisis.
Recently, he incorrectly explained his own crown rules. That annoys many citizens. Johnson himself says he has made a full recovery. But he can’t completely dispel rumors that he’s not as fit as he used to be.
