Health Minister Alain Berset (48) was pleased to see the approval of the first coronavirus vaccine in Switzerland. “This is very good news,” the Federal Council said in a video posted Saturday on Twitter.
The vaccine is effective and safe, Berset said. It has been tested as strictly as any other vaccine to hit the market in Switzerland. However, following approval decisions in other countries such as the United States, Great Britain and the EU, the Swiss authorities came under great pressure.
“Start in the next few days”
Berset also said that vaccinations “would begin in the next few days.” Older people and those with previous illnesses have the highest priority. The Federal Council reiterated that vaccines are not compulsory, all citizens receive them for free.
Vaccination is an important stage in the crisis, Berset said. “But it doesn’t solve all the problems.” It will be a long time before enough people are vaccinated to control the pandemic. Until then, protective measures would continue to apply. Berset mentioned, for example, the obligation to wear a mask or hygiene measures. (SDA)
