The corona pandemic continues to keep the world in suspense. To protect people, countries around the world have taken a number of measures in recent months. Many countries, including Switzerland, imposed a blockade as a supposedly quick and effective measure.
But now a Wall Street Journal report, based on statements by US authorities, is causing a stir. This shows the devastating consequences of the confinement.
Death from operations postponed for fear of Corona
According to the report, significantly more Americans have died from Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cerebrovascular disease since March 2020 than the average between 2015 and 2019.
According to the “Wall Street Journal”, the lethality of the corona pandemic goes “far beyond the people who have died from corona infection.” This means: quite a few deaths are not due to the virus, but to corona measures.
According to estimates by US health authorities, up to 263,000 people died in the US between January and August 2020. But only 188,000 of them died from the corona virus. According to experts, the other 75,000 people died due to postponed operations and canceled hospital visits, fearing corona infections.
The blockade kills more people than the virus
The German minister for development aid, Gerd Müller (65, CSU), is sure, according to the “Handelsblatt”: “Many more will die from the consequences of the blockade than from the virus.” In Africa alone, Müller expects 400,000 more deaths from malaria and HIV, as well as half a million more deaths from tuberculosis this year.
According to the development aid minister, there are several reasons for this forecast. On the one hand, the supply of food and medicine in Africa has collapsed, on the other hand, the focus of the industrialized countries is currently “so much on the fight against the crown at home” that other problems would be lost sight of.
Worldwide, more than 33.3 million people have been infected with the disease since the coronavirus outbreak and more than a million have died. (wheel)
