Corona infections are rising inexorably, they haven’t been as high as they are for a long time. Even if the Minister of Health, Alain Berset (48), repeatedly emphasizes that the number of cases alone does not say much: it is not good news.
Two months ago, Berset referred to the positivity rate, which indicates how many of the tests performed are positive. But this also goes up and up. On Tuesday, the BAG gave a positive rate of 9.7 percent; we haven’t had it since mid-April.
Who would care
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this value is even worrying. The organization assumes that the situation is manageable as long as the value is less than 5 percent. But if it is higher, the risk of the pandemic getting out of control increases.
Researchers at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University in the United States explain why: a higher positive rate suggests that there are more people with coronavirus who have not been tested. The researchers advise doing more testing, and certainly not considering further relaxation of the corona measures.
“Subject to large fluctuations”
So do we have to tighten the screw again? Two points speak against it: First, the daily numbers don’t say much, as the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) writes in a VIEW application. “The daily number of positive tests is subject to greater fluctuation and therefore should be interpreted with caution,” said spokesman Daniel Dauwalder. The positivity rate for the past seven days is more reliable.
At the moment, this is 6.2 percent, and the trend is clearly increasing, as confirmed by BAG. Second, new corona cases can be traced to metropolitan areas and certain sources of infection, such as family celebrations. So as long as you know where people are infected, you think you are still in control of the situation.
