Vaccinations start today in central Switzerland. Loud voices warn of competition between the cantons.
The wait is over. This morning the first Swiss will be vaccinated against Corona. The Army spokesman, Stefan Hofer, confirmed that yesterday morning the first 107,000 doses of the first approved vaccine arrived in the country by highway.
The canton of Lucerne starts vaccination. Lucerne health director Guido Graf expects the canton to receive 5,000 doses today. “They are reserved for our citizens in homes for the elderly and the elderly,” he explains.
The vaccination campaign gets complicated
Although there are around 100,000 doses of vaccines in the country, the vaccination campaign will be complex. The canton of Lucerne alone anticipates the need for 500,000 doses of vaccine. The problem with this is that all the other cantons also want to receive as many doses of vaccine as possible as quickly as possible. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the vaccine is constantly cooled to minus 70 degrees. Otherwise, it is spoiled.
In addition to Lucerne, other central Swiss cantons and Appenzell Innerrhoden want to start vaccinating today, also in healthcare centers. The remaining cantons will follow next week or the following week.
We do not want competition between the cantons. Because there are no compromises when it comes to safety.
While many welcome the fact that vaccination is proceeding rapidly, there are also important voices of warning. One of them is Rudolf Hauri. The cantonal doctor of Zug and president of the Association of Cantonal Doctors warns of a race: “We do not want competition between the cantons. Because there are no compromises when it comes to safety, ”he says.
For example, staff must be well trained. Furthermore, not only must the cold chain be guaranteed, vaccination centers are also needed throughout the country.
If everyone who wishes is to be vaccinated, the 26 cantons face a complex task. Also, the vaccine is only delivered in installments. In other words: today the first people will be vaccinated against Covid-19, but it will still be summer until there is enough vaccine available for a large part of the population.
