In England it’s been fun again. Due to the increasing rate of corona infection, nonessential pubs, clubs, restaurants, cinemas and stores have to close. Since schools and universities remain open, there is talk of a partial closure. But having fun with friends on the way out is out of the question until December 2.
In Britain, each part of the country decides its Crown measurements for itself. In England, the second lockdown has been in effect since midnight. Until then, however, many Brits who liked to drink were still really full.
Only police officers wore masks
The celebrations took place in numerous cities. This is also the case in the capital, London: crowds of people packed the streets, many partygoers were drunk. “It’s like New Year’s Eve here,” said a passerby in the British media. Hardly anyone paid attention to the distance. The masks were only worn by the police officers who had to restrain the party people.
In some cities there were even riots and fights. In Merseyside, in the north of England, police officers trying to break up a gathering of several hundred people were attacked with fireworks. The celebrants not only threatened emergency services, but also increased the risk of infection with their behavior, police say. And after a massive fight in the south of England, the police arrested two people.
Nearly 500 deaths and 25,000 new infections in one day
With nearly 500 deaths in one day, the UK has hit the highest level of corona deaths since mid-May. The responsible statistics agency on Wednesday reported 492 cases in which patients had tested positive for the coronavirus within the four weeks prior to their death. At the same time, the office in Great Britain recorded more than 25,000 new corona infections in one day.
With tens of thousands of corona deaths since the epidemic began, the UK is considered the worst affected country in Europe to date. For the NHS national health service, the highest level of warning applies from Thursday. It is heading into a “dire situation,” NHS chief Simon Stevens said Wednesday. (noo / SDA)
