With the colder season and more frequent indoor activities, the importance of coronavirus transmission through so-called aerosols may increase, the federal Covid-19 Scientific Working Group wrote in its latest “Policy Brief.” Aerosols are particles in the air that are smaller than droplets and remain in the air for some time.
It is not yet clear how important aerosols play in the transmission of Sars-CoV-2. However, according to the expert group, aerosols have been shown to play an important role in overproliferation events in poorly ventilated indoor spaces and, in particular, with activities such as talking, singing, yelling, and physical activity.
Routine ventilation is important
Experts advise people to wear masks indoors despite a minimum distance of 1.5 meters, especially in poorly ventilated rooms where they spend long periods of time. They also recommended adequate ventilation, avoiding large crowds of people indoors, short stays in poorly ventilated rooms and, if possible, avoiding activities with high emissions of aerosols.
Systematic ventilation is most important in the cold season, when windows are closed and rooms are heated and social activities take place indoors, the working group wrote. In many cases, opening the window briefly at regular intervals is the simplest form of ventilation. (SDA / bra)
