Corona skeptics settle on the podium with Daniel Koch

A discussion about the proportionality of the crown measures should have arisen on a podium for the documentary “Unheard.” Instead, it says “Mr. Corona” Daniel Koch in the pillory of Corona skeptics.

Many participants apparently only agree that the mask belongs under the nose.

“That is unheard of!” calls a woman in front of the entrance to the Samsung Hall in Dübendorf. Since you do not want to register using a QR code, you cannot enter the event hall or watch the movie. She doesn’t have a cell phone, “and neither would I if I had one.” She will be in the front row later.

The queues in front of the entrance. A woman is on the phone, turns to the man next to her and says, “Trevi said you installed the app.” – ‘Spinnsch? Certainly wrong. ”Her colleague proudly says she was kicked off the train the day before because she refused to wear a mask.

Here you have to use one. It is mandatory to wear a mask, in theory.

The rebels have demonstratively labeled their masks: “alarming”, “I can’t breathe”, “Communication needs facial expressions”. A woman uses the mask as a hat. The imagination knows no limits. Many participants apparently only agree that the mask belongs under the nose.

Shortly before eight o’clock, Reto Brennwald, director, television host and star of the evening, took the stage. 950 people came to Samsung Hall this Friday night to see the premiere of Brennwald’s documentary “Unheard of.” Brennwald is visibly flattered. “At first we thought of a country cinema with 50 people,” he says, and the crowd laughs.

The director produced his work in five months. The film is said to cost 100,000 francs, financed through crowdfunding. Brennwald himself calls it a snapshot. It has to say that, because the film is out of date: it illuminates the months between June and September, when Switzerland emerged from the first wave of the crown crisis. The movie was finished a few weeks ago, shortly before the rapid rise in crown numbers.

All questions from the roundtable were directed to Daniel Koch.

Switzerland is now on the brink of a second lockdown, the number of people testing positive has never been higher, and hospitals are filling up again. Is now really the time for criticism of Corona? Brennwald says: “This is a good time because now we are faced with the same decisions as in March.”

It’s not so unheard of

A few hours earlier, Brennwald showed his film to some representatives of the media. Four arrived.

Brennwald, with the mask under his nose, says: “We need a discussion about proportionality.” You want to encourage this with your movie. But Brennwald himself does not want to lead this discussion.

If you ask him what measures were disproportionate, he does not answer. If you ask him why the way the Swedes, which is presented as a model solution in the film, should have been better financially, he can’t say that either. Brennwald wants to argue, but doesn’t want to take a position. At least not in public.

His film, on the other hand, is very critical. Among other things, the so-called “media mainstream” is denounced. This calls into question the usefulness of the mask. Criticize the confinement.

There are also dissenting voices, for example a photographer who suffers from Corona and recovers, a pathologist who shows the lung damage of people infected with corona or the ex-Mister-Corona Daniel Koch. But the mix is not balanced. And that is wanted.

Brennwald says he wants to give a voice to the other side, the “unheard of”. It is advocacy work. The flaw: these voices aren’t that outrageous. Among the protagonists would be the infectologist Pietro Vernazza (1267 entries in the Swiss media database since last October), the immunologist Beda Stadler (675 entries) or the comedian Marco Rima (475 entries).

Brennwald also realizes that these voices were definitely present in the media landscape: “That’s right, the situation has now changed.” So what is the problem?

Brennwald is particularly concerned about “media scaremongering.” Very little was said about the fact that there were people who suffered little or no Corona. The media reportedly focused too much on tragic individual cases and presented a distorted image.

But: these people don’t have a voice in Brennwald’s movie either. Brennwald mentions people who suffer from Covid-19 less seriously in a subordinate clause. Because as a journalist you also know: if nothing has happened, there is nothing to report.

Koch plays 1 against 950

Of course, that doesn’t bother the audience at the Samsung Hall. With every critical statement from Corona in the film, for example, Wetziker’s family doctor Claudio Schmidli, you hear applause. Every time Daniel Koch shows up, boos are heard.

In the post-film panel discussion, a dialogue “on proportionality of measures” should emerge with family physician Schmidli, ex-BAG Daniel Koch, comedian Stefan Büsser and trade association president Hans-Ulrich Bigler.

It quickly becomes clear: he is actually a pillory for Daniel Koch.

Daniel Koch, former director of the department of “Communicable Diseases” at the Federal Office of Public Health, says that public scientific debate has led to a “cacaphony.”

At first the discussion is still civilized, Brennwald moderates and lets everyone participate with a statement. But the mood is heated. The film moved the audience.

When he hit the Wunder is approached by Elgg, Koch wants to bring up a counterexample: he talks about a nursing home where a quarter of Corona’s residents died. The crowd sighs ironically, someone yells “ui nei”. Brennwald intervenes and asks for respect.

The situation threatens to worsen with regard to chorizo: the effectiveness of the measures. Koch, calmly as if he had a bottle of Valium behind the scenes, says the biggest mistake was publicly conducting scientific discussion about possible scenarios and measures. “That led to a cacophony.”

In front of a crowd that doesn’t feel like they have been listened to, Koch says they don’t have the right to.

Questions from the audience are now also allowed. Koch plays 1 against 950.

Someone asks: How can we break the media so that such panic does not spread?

A spectator calls: wake up!

Other: turn off the media!

The usual suspects have arrived. Take, for example, Corona skeptic Melanie Kolic, who Daniel Koch has also publicly harassed. She yells on stage: “The virus has not been tested!”

Daniel Stricker, the self-proclaimed free speech fighter and YouTube channel operator, receives the microphone. While filming with his smartphone, he asks Daniel Koch: “How do you deal with this cognitive dissonance?” Koch responds widely, but does not respond to provocation. The crowd yells, “Answer the question!”

“You have to be able to bear extreme opinions”

In the end, the other panelists also occasionally comment. Comedian Büsser appeals to personal responsibility when using the media. The president of the trade association, Bigler, admits that he understands people’s fears, but agrees with Koch in his statement: “The scientific debate should not have been held in public.”

Büsser is forgiving: “We have to get back together and talk to each other.” – “I couldn’t have done a better commercial for Corona Dialog,” says Brennwald. Büsser responds: “You can pay me directly or tell Bill Gates.”

After the performance, a quiet Daniel Koch is sitting backstage. “It was what I expected,” he says. Such events would often be used by those groups that spoke out loud. They are not the ones seeking dialogue. “They are a minority, but they are very present.”

But Koch also realizes that this discussion is necessary. “I have absolutely no problem with that. You have to be able to bear extreme opinions. “So this dialogue is very important for an open society like Switzerland.” I just doubt that it will really bring much to the end. “

The evening was a success for Brennwald. He announces that Corona Dialogue wants to go on tour. The film will be posted on YouTube on Monday. You can also rent him and his movie for private parties.

Brennwald doesn’t want to call himself a crown skeptic. The virus is real, so he’s a bit skeptical. And your audience? Brennwald, of course, cannot speak for anyone. But you know exactly where the applause came from in Dübendorf.

Reto Brennwald, a television journalist and filmmaker, is clearly pleased with the premiere. You can even reserve it for private parties.
