Swiss airline, in the red from the corona pandemic, will save on cabin crew from 2021 to 2023. A corresponding savings package has been negotiated with the cabin crew union (Kapers), the airline announced on Friday night.
The measures are limited in time, it is said. Union members will be voted on as soon as possible. The collective bargaining agreement between Kapers and the airline, which is valid today, will continue until at least 2025 after the end of the measures in 2023.
The savings package includes concrete measures to reduce costs and cuts. Employees should be encouraged to take early retirement and also to work part-time. In general, this will result in a cost reduction of around ten percent. The natural fluctuation will also lead to savings of an additional ten percent.
Crews are shrinking
According to information from Tamedia, there is also a long-term thinning of the crews. Starting next March, Swiss will fly to destinations such as Hong Kong, Singapore or San Francisco with at least one less flight attendant.
Also, crews should rotate faster. After a long-haul flight, your stay should only last one night instead of the usual two.
Apparently there are also wage cuts. From March to August 2021, the short-term salaries of employees receiving less than 4,000 Swiss francs will no longer be increased to 100, but only to 95 percent. In the months after the end of reduced-time work, September through December 2021, all crew members will need to be prepared to receive reduced wages.
Less holidays
More cuts will follow: in 2022, the cabin manager’s 13th monthly salary will be eliminated for a year. Holidays are reduced by up to two days for the entire cabin crew. And in 2023, a pending salary step will be postponed for all those affected.
Switzerland is suffering greatly from the corona pandemic. The Lufthansa subsidiary loses almost two million francs a day. With the release of the nine-month figures on Thursday, the airline had already announced job cuts and put it at around 1,000 jobs over the next two years. (ise)
