The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) sees the risk of corona infections as an additional reason to quit smoking. Smokers with a damaged bronchial system have “according to current data, an increased risk of a severe course of the disease,” BZgA chief Heidrun Thaiss said in Bonn on Monday. Studies also suggested that smokers are more susceptible to infections. Typical smoking habits played a role.
Thaiss explained that when you smoke, your fingers regularly come up to your face. At the same time, he noted that there have only been a few significant scientific studies on the relationship between smoking and corona so far. But smoking is also known to weaken the immune system and make it more susceptible to respiratory diseases. In principle, it is “advisable to stop smoking at any time,” he emphasized. (AFP)
