Joseph Varon has been on duty continuously since March – Texas’ chief physician and his team are working to the limit – the corona pandemic does not allow them to calm down. A photo of Varon is now going viral and reaching people all over the world.
The photo was taken at the United Memorial Medical Center in Houston. It shows the doctor holding and comforting an elderly patient in his arms. Varon wears a protective suit. It’s your 252nd consecutive workday in a corona intensive care unit!
“I want to be with my wife”
As Varon told CNN, the photo was taken over the Thanksgiving holiday. The older man tried to get out of bed that day. “I want to be with my wife,” said the crown patient, according to Varon, through tears.
That’s why she hugged him. The patient felt better afterwards and was able to regain hope. According to Varon, the older man should be released this week, then he could finally return to his wife.
“Nurses break down”
Many patients would suffer isolation in the corona intensive care unit, says Varon. But the staff is also on edge. “My nurses break down, some cry in the middle of the day because they get sad about situations like this,” he says.
Varon warned that many Americans would not follow hygiene rules: “It’s crazy. People don’t listen and then they end up in my intensive care unit, ”he says.
