SRG Corona’s fifth survey shows: Today, only 16 percent would immediately opt for a Covid-19 vaccine. Much persuasion awaits the authorities and science.
Get vaccinated against Covid-19? In the SRG survey conducted by the Sotomo research center, respondents were asked how they felt about corona vaccination. Between October 23 and November 2, now that the number of cases is higher than in spring, more than 40,000 people participated in the survey.
There is still no remedy for Corona in the whole world. Except for social stagnation. In Italy there is a curfew at night, the French (36,000 dead) are only allowed to go out in urgent cases. In Switzerland, many hospitals are on the attack, the federal government will give companies tax money to keep them alive.
So in this situation, the above question is asked. Get vaccinated against Covid-19? No, let’s say 28 percent of more than 40,000 respondents. No! Although so far nothing has been able to eradicate Corona apart from vaccination. “I’d wait and see first,” say another 18 percent. And 29 percent say they will only get vaccinated against Covid-19 “if it has been shown that it cannot have side effects.” Side effects of the vaccines used in Switzerland are swelling, redness of the skin, and occasionally fever.
How can it be?
We are experiencing the world’s first devastating pandemic and only 16 per cent of the Swiss would “get vaccinated immediately” today. A large majority are cautious or even negative. How can it be?
So: the Swiss are skeptical of vaccines. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that postmodern medicine, that is, the relativization of scientific facts, is also popular in the knowledge nation of Switzerland. In 2009 we added homeopathy to basic health insurance on voicemail.
We are also influenced by our immediate surroundings. Skepticism about vaccines is contagious, in face-to-face conversations and via YouTube. This was proven by a federal study in 2014. We no longer allow orthodox physicians to tell us without question what is correct.
Race for billions
Furthermore, corona vaccination takes place under enormous time pressure. Every day counts. Money plays a huge role. Governments compete, a race for billions and for our health. Who can guarantee they won’t end up injecting a goof under their skin?
A Herculean task awaits the federal government, but also the media, specialized agencies and universities: to build trust. Trust the official approval processes in Switzerland. That no fluff gets into the syringes. Confidence in the usefulness of vaccination: that the vaccine not only protects you like an umbrella, but also extends a protective roof over society as a whole. Those who get vaccinated help risk groups: the elderly, hundreds of thousands with previous diseases such as cancer or diabetes, pregnant women.
Educational work should begin in light of the survey results. To this day, a life free of Covid-19 is only possible with a vaccine.
