The authorities and the carnival committee do not want large gatherings. Cliques should now consider alternatives
Due to the crown pandemic, next year there will also be no Basel Carnival in the usual style. On Monday night, as the organizer of the street carnival, the Basler Fasnachtscommittee informed the heads of all cliques that crowds of people, whether indoors or outdoors, should be avoided. Carrying out the carnival in its previous form is “irresponsible”.
What exactly that means and if the big Monday and Wednesday afternoon parades, as well as the morning joke, are in jeopardy, the Carnival Committee still left it open.
Many individual activities instead of big movements
The Fasnachts committee encouraged cliques to come up with concepts by the end of September so that they can still hold a kind of carnival in such a way that Corona’s safety regulations can be met. This could be, for example, a small move, a so-called courtship, in a neighborhood, or a morning joke in a park. “Instead of organizing nine hours of Cortège, we are ready to coordinate and facilitate many individual activities,” the Committee wrote in a press release.
It remains to be seen if the Basel carnival people will still be interested in a carnival under these circumstances. In 2020 they had to give up their carnival. The carnival was canceled just hours before the start. However, this could possibly prevent hospitals from being overloaded by corona patients, as in other countries, the medical director of the Basel University Hospital told Radio SRF’s “Regionaljournal Basel” in April.
Lucerne: “No carnival is an alternative”
Carnival despite Corona, yes or no? This is the question that worries the Lucerne carnival crowd. On Monday evening, representatives of the city, the Lucerne Carnival Committee (LFK), United Guugenmusigen and the catering industry met here for the first time.
No concrete decisions have been made. But the LFK spokesman, Peti Federer, is clear: “No carnival is not an alternative,” as he said in an interview with Radio SRF. Everyone involved in the discussion group agreed that the carnival should take place, albeit in a different way than usual. “A big bang with 10,000 people crowding Kapellplatz will not work,” says Federer.
The search for ideas also continues in Lucerne
On the other hand, smaller events are quite conceivable. The two great carnival parades could also take place if he can find “creative solutions” for them, says Federer; At most, benches or folding chairs for the audience are possible, comparable to the Sechseläuten parade in Zurich.
It is not yet clear when final decisions on the Lucerne Carnival can be expected in 2021; initially, as in Basel, the search for ideas on how to save Carnival is ongoing.
There is no decision in Solothurn yet – the decision will likely be made in October, according to the Solothurn OK Carnival at the request of SRF News.
