In Geneva, B.1.1.7. 80 percent of new infections. An increase in cases is possible.

On February 17, the Federal Council will present concrete proposals on how to proceed with the crown measures. At the same time, it is clear: the new crown variants continue to spread.

Geneva is ahead of the rest of Switzerland, as new figures from the Geneva University Hospital show. 80 percent of all positive corona test results can now be traced back to new variants.

Effects difficult to assess

According to the doctors and experts at the hospital, this is further proof that B.1.1.7. it is more contagious than its predecessor. It is less clear whether the South African and Brazilian variants are more contagious than the previous corona variants.

However, both variants were found multiple times around the world, precisely where the number of cases was increasing at the same time. For the South African and Brazilian variants, however, they are still relatively rare in Switzerland.

The beginning of a recovery?

In Geneva, the number of cases was expected to continue to decline thanks to strict measures from the Crown. But the opposite happens. The number of cases has stagnated at just over 100 new cases a day, and has been for weeks.

One possible explanation is that current Corona measures may keep the most contagious British variant under control. One second, that the domain of B.1.1.7. leads to an increase in the number of backlog cases. That would be the case if the British variant had completely won.
