More than a quarter of a million people have already had to go into corona quarantine. The Avenir Suisse think tank presents this high number. Although the federal government and the cantons – as so often in this crisis – do not have detailed figures, Avenir Suisse reaches this conclusion with information from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and data from the cantons.
According to the BAG, around 200,000 people have been quarantined in the last four months. The office has no information for previous months. In accordance with the Public Information Law, Avenir Suisse requested the data from the cantons. 16 cantons provided information, the expert group writes in a press release. From these data, Avenir Suisse extrapolated that 265,000 to 270,000 people should be quarantined.
Few were positive in the summer
Estimates indicated that people were positive only eight percent of the time, only four percent during the summer. Many of the people who had to be quarantined for ten days were absent from the labor market. Except for the kids and the office workers. The latter could do their work from home well.
It is difficult to calculate the damage caused because people were not standing at the construction site or sitting on the box. For a general calculation, it should also be noted that some of the people in quarantine at work could have infected other people with Corona. The damage to the affected company would have been much greater.
However: it is difficult to understand that many returnees on vacation had to be quarantined in summer, even though they were returning from countries with lower crown numbers than their canton of residence.
Interference with personal freedom
Avenir Suisse emphasizes that it is a decisive invasion of the personal freedom of the individual if he is no longer allowed to leave his own four walls for ten days.
Therefore, the expert group calls on the federal government and the cantons to accurately collect and disclose all data on the quarantine in the future. And above all to check the quarantine for return trips, but also to check the quarantine in general.
Vogt for a shorter quarantine
Employer President Valentin Vogt (60) seems a pretty high quarter of a million. And he emphasizes: “It is true that quarantine makes sense.” But the question is whether the quarantine time can be shortened. “We could imagine halving the quarantine period to five days, combined with a rapid test.” Vogt thinks above all of people who work for business and not just in private.
According to him, the reliability of rapid corona tests can only be demonstrated when they are used. Roche’s rapid test is currently being validated by the federal government. According to the Federal Office of Public Health, it should be clear in a few days how reliable it is, and based on this, then it can be decided how the test can be used.
Vogt also helps companies contribute to the rapid test costs for their employees. “The goal should be to shorten the quarantine period.” (pt)
