Fewer skiers, curfew at 3pm, that’s what Berset is planning for winter sports
What will the 2020/21 winter season be like? Health Minister Alain Berset apparently went to the cantons for a consultation on Monday with a draft comprehensive ordinance, says in a report in the “Tagesanzeiger”, which has the corresponding role.
The most controversial point: the regulation of the number of visitors. According to the report, Berset offers ski areas two options:
- Either ski areas allow a maximum of two thirds of the number of guests on the most visited day of the previous season.
- OR: The number of guests is limited to 80 percent of the average Christmas vacation for the past five years.

The document also stipulates that cable cars with standing space can only be used for two-thirds. Several mountain railways are already doing it on a voluntary basis. When queuing for the elevator, distance rules must apply in addition to the mask requirements.

There are also restrictions on catering service: guests should only be able to enter mountain restaurants if a table is available. Also, restaurants and ski huts will close at 3pm
In ski resorts, people are not happy with these measures. As Mario Davatz from Berbahnen Grüsch-Danusa told the Tagesanzeiger:
In turn, measures in Switzerland are likely to be too weak for other countries: Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte called last week to start the ski season in mid-January. It received support from Germany and France. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz disagrees with this. You would like to decide for yourself when and if the ski areas remain open.
The cantons have until Wednesday to respond to Berset’s proposals. On Friday, the Federal Council will likely make a final decision on the restrictions. (Mountain range)
