No, you read that correctly: Athletic Bilbao can win the Copa del Rey twice in two weeks in April. Corona makes it possible.
On Saturday night, Athletic has the first chance to win the Cup for the 24th time in the Basque duel with San Sebastián. This is the final of the last (!) Cup Season that could not be played to the end due to the pandemic. Or to put it in the words of defender Ander Capa:
The longest final in the world.
Two weeks later, Bilbao will have another chance to win the cup. Then the Basques are the outsiders in the final of this season against the revitalized Barcelona.
According to Juan Maria Aburto, mayor of Bilbao, a title would be “an exceptional social vaccine”. And at the same time it would show the children of the city, who, as everywhere, run like little messis or Ronaldos: “You can also win with an Athletic shirt.” That, in turn, would reinforce the club’s unique philosophy of betting only on Basque or provincially trained players.
