Graubünden will be the first canton to start testing in the crown area on Friday. Since Wednesday, more than 9,500 people have signed up for the test marathon, which is initially limited to 18 communities in southern Grisons (BLICK reported). That’s almost half of the 20,000 inhabitants of the valley.
The start of the rapid test marathon was done yesterday by the 108 deputies of the cantonal parliament. Result: A member of parliament tested positive and was quarantined, as it is called in a VIEW request. This may very well have prevented a superpreader event in the winter session.
Queue of people at -15 degrees
In many places, people line up on Friday mornings. In St. Moritz, people brave the cold -15 degrees – and wait in front of Dorf’s school. Photographer Giancarlo Cattaneo (71) was also one of the first to be tested. Already surviving Corona with a difficult course, he fought for his life in hospital for 18 days, he said in an interview with BLICK. And it still suffers from the long-term effects today.
At the Bonaduz school, one hundred high school students and 50 teachers from the Bonaduz school were tested for COVID-19 on Thursday morning, the health department announced. One of the people tested tested positive. The closest contact persons of the person who tested positive were identified and reported.
Rapid false positive tests in Austria
However, the Austrian experience shows that positive results after rapid tests should be treated with caution. In the capital Vienna, 106 people tested positive for the coronavirus with rapid test kits from Siemens and Roche during the first two days of testing.
Those affected were also subjected to the PCR test. The positive diagnosis could only be confirmed in 45 people. Or to put it another way: More than half of the supposedly ill people were wrongly positive!
The Viennese authorities have not yet fully assessed the figures. However, there are indications that the majority of the total 669 cases should not have had the virus at all.
Graubünden managers believe in their staff
Faced with the results of Ösi by VIEW, the Graubünden management team decides: “We are aware of the problem. That is why deployed medical staff are recruited and trained through the well-developed hospital infrastructure in southern Graubünden. ”This should ‘greatly reduce’ user-related errors.
It is not known how well this will succeed. Because: Unlike Austria, the results of the rapid test in Graubünden are not re-checked by a PCR test. Therefore, anyone who receives a false positive result must be quarantined for ten days. Like the surroundings!
For their part, the Bündners rely on the rapid tests of the American manufacturer Panbio Abbott. And trust that the accuracy information (sensitivity: 91.4 percent) is correct.
Results should be enjoyed with caution
Specifically: if the 20,000 people from the south of Graubünden participated in the test of the area, the authorities believe that they would find 200 infected people. About 40 of these would then be false positives. “At best, they are surprised they have no symptoms. This, of course, is uncomfortable and annoying for those affected, ”said the management team.
At the same time, it is to be expected in this simulation game that among the 20,000 there are also 17 infected people who are false negatives. In other words, sick people who would not be recognized by rapid test kits. These would then unknowingly spread Corona. Therefore, the results should be viewed with caution. Especially if at least half of the population cannot get tested.
