France should have been on the federal government’s risk list for a long time. Because the number of Corona cases is currently 139 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and therefore significantly exceeds the limit set by the federal government.
However, due to the large number of cross-border travelers, the Federal Council has so far had difficulties in declaring the neighboring country a risk zone. In Geneva alone, 80,000 people cross the border every day to work in Switzerland. If they had to be quarantined for ten days, this would pose big problems for employers and employees.
Just individual regions instead of the whole country?
The Minister of Health, Alain Berset (48), now proposes a possible way out. He only wants to include French regions on the risk list that have particularly high case numbers. That could actually be Paris or Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Border regions, on the other hand, would be excluded with such regionalization, and cross-border travelers would be freed from the obligation to quarantine themselves. According to the “Tages-Anzeiger”, Berset’s proposal should not only affect France, but also apply to all neighboring countries if necessary.
