American low-cost airline JetBlue was the first in the United States to introduce the mask requirement earlier this week. Now they follow the three international providers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Everyone introduces the mandatory mask before May 11 at the latest.
United Airlines and Delta also leave every second seat free and introduce stepped boarding. In this way, the rules of social distancing must be followed as much as possible. However, all airlines emphasize that the measures will be introduced temporarily until further notice and not permanently.
Without surgical mask
Airlines do not verify whether passengers wear a certified hygiene mask or bandana. “A facial mask that can be made from materials at home is sufficient,” says the American Airlines website. Exception: especially young passengers and those who cannot wear a mask for health reasons. Airlines also want to distribute masks and disinfectants.
Delta airline claims to regularly check the temperature of its employees to detect an early outbreak of the disease. They also have to wear masks. Mask users can only remove protection when eating on board.
In the United States, many people still fly domestic flights. A passenger told American journalists about a crowded American Airline plane from Dallas, Texas to Los Angeles, California. “We all sit together on the plane,” says Vince Warburton (32) of his three-hour flight. His seat was a middle seat in a full row. “I felt very uncomfortable.”
