Europa-Park is a popular destination for the Swiss. More than a million visitors make the pilgrimage from Switzerland to Rust in southern Germany each year to visit roller coasters and worlds of adventure. But that is over now. The park is closed due to the recently organized mini-blockade in Germany.
This is a shock to the operators: “The decision surprises us because we have relied on the politicians’ assurance that there will be no new lockdown”, says the founder and managing partner of the amusement park Roland Mack (71). “This is particularly bitter because it can be proven that neither hotels, restaurants, amusement parks nor water parks were the cause of the infection.”
Mini-lockdown hits hard Europa-Park-Park
But everything is useless. The German government wants to limit the hustle and bustle at amusement parks like Europa-Park. Because the number of cases is also increasing in the neighboring country. There are currently almost 17,000 cases per day in Germany with a population of 83 million.
As of Monday, the following applies in Germany: Leisure and entertainment events are largely prohibited throughout Germany. The rule remains in effect until the end of November and also applies to theaters, concert halls and sports facilities.
Reserves melt dramatically
“As a midsize company, we can only beat this financially because we’ve done well for decades,” says Mack. “However, our reserves are drastically melting.”
Even before the new blockade, Europa-Park was battling financial losses caused by the Corona crisis. That’s why operators announced in the summer that the park would like to keep its doors open for the first time this year until the end of the cold season. Nothing will come of it at first. Now the operators hope to be able to receive the first guests earlier than usual, at least next year, in early March. (vnf)
