Two waves of corona infection have hit the Eulachtal care center in Elgg, 56 people have been infected. Among them were 25 very old residents with previous illnesses. However, according to home director Maria Hofer-Fausch, most of those infected had no symptoms or only mild symptoms. as reported by NZZ. Of the few residents with somewhat more severe symptoms, none had to go to the hospital. Meanwhile, all the residents have recovered and been released from isolation.

In other retirement homes, crown buds had dramatic consequences to a similar degree. For example, 14 out of 64 infected people died in a care center in Siviriez, Freiburg. And in the canton of Zurich, during the first wave of the pandemic, 60 percent of those who died were residents of nursing homes.

Elgg’s case is a mystery even to experts. “That actually borders on a miracle,” says Zürich canton doctor Christiane Meier to the NZZ. There is no evidence that the virus has weakened overall. Hugo Sax, infectologist at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and chief border doctor at Zurich airport, talks about an extremely astonishing case. Now it would be interesting to investigate the strain of virus that spread in Elgger’s retirement home, Sax says. This could help explain the phenomenon.
