According to the French sports daily “L’Equipe”, Benôit Paire (ATP 22) will have to do without a start at the US Open in New York. The 31-year-old Frenchman is said to have tested positive for the corona virus and is currently in isolation in a hotel.

Paire had passed several negative tests after arriving in New York on August 18. He left the first round game of the Cincinnati Flushing Meadows tournament against Borna Coric with stomach problems when the score was 0: 6, 0: 1.

Organizers confirmed a positive case, but did not give names. The player must be quarantined for at least ten days and contact tracing has been launched.

For Paire to be infected within the bubble that the New York players are in seems practically impossible. “Currently, there is no safer place in the world than here,” said Dominic Thiem. Players are monitored 24 hours a day and can only leave their hotel to access the Flushing Meadows facility. Austria’s world number 3 is currently not worried. “It would suck if it turned into a chain of infection.”

The controversial Grand Slam tournament at Flushing Meadows begins Monday. No more corona cases can be ruled out during the tournament after the most recent positive test.
