5 points showing the evolution of the crown in Switzerland
The Christmas holidays are over, the New Years festivities have begun. The epidemiological situation in Switzerland is currently very difficult to assess. We try five points.
The numbers for December 29
The Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) released the latest figures on the coronavirus today:
After “only” 10,087 cases were reported yesterday over the past four days, today’s numbers with 4197 new infections are back at the pre-Christmas level.
Martin Ackermann, head of the federal task force, repeated several times at the press conference: “The number of cases is simply too high. We recommend that we can cut this in half every two weeks. “

Beware of current numbers
In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute provides current figures with a caveat:
Therefore, the number of cases should be viewed with double caution. Conditions are also similar in Switzerland. There were fewer opportunities for testing, fewer people saw a doctor, and reports may be late, according to the canton. Unsurprisingly, we won’t see the real effects of the holiday season until early / mid January.
Linda Nartey, vice president of the Cantonal Medical Association, said at Tuesday’s press conference: “The currently available data cannot give a reliable picture of the epidemiological situation.”
More on the data clutter in Switzerland:
Developments in the cantons
The current 14-day incidents in the Swiss cantons are dropping almost everywhere. But as mentioned: the current figures should be viewed with caution.

The current situation in Switzerland and around the world:
Use of intensive care units
The number of Covid patients in intensive care units in Switzerland has barely increased since mid-November. About two-thirds of the intensive care beds used are occupied by Covid patients. Also since mid-November, IPS capacity utilization has been around three-quarters in Switzerland.
As Linda Nartey, vice president of the Cantonal Doctors Association, explained in Tuesday’s press conference, this is no reason to give in: “The occupation of the IPS is at a very high level. The burden on the health system and especially on the staff remains too high. “
In some cantons, the situation is still very tense. Martin Ackermann, president of the Federal Task Force, explained the situation in hospitals: “We are and will remain in a risk zone.”
This is the overview of the canton of intensive care units:
R values of the cantons
R values are again below 1. In all cantons, the expected target of an R value below 0.8 (strong decline) is currently only in Appenzell Innerrhoden (0.75 since).
Switzerland has an R-value of 0.86. It should be noted that R values can only be calculated with a delay. That is why we refer to the latest ETH data from December 15:
