For days, the Alpine countries of Europe have been arguing about closing winter sports businesses to prevent the corona virus from spreading again, for example through winter sports enthusiasts. While Germany and Italy are campaigning for an opening only after the New Year, Austria and Switzerland do not want to close their ski areas, mostly for economic reasons.
Now the sound is noticeably harsher. The president of the Italian Health Council, Franco Locatelli, said in the newspaper “La Stampa”: “Switzerland’s decision to keep the ski resorts open is disappointing.” He and other scientists advise the Ministry of Health and prepare status reports for the crown.
Quarantined ski tourists
In view of the corona pandemic, Localtelli expects ski areas to be closed by the end of the year, otherwise calling for quarantine for those returning from abroad. “If that weren’t the case, I would say it makes sense to provide a period of isolation for returnees to protect the general public,” he says.
Austria is also getting fat. Austria is part of the EU and Locatelli called it “surprising” that Vienna did not accept the proposal of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Italian government to keep plants closed to protect against infection.
20,600 new infections on Sunday
Meanwhile, Corona data in Italy shows that restrictive measures in recent weeks have taken effect. The reproductive value, which indicates how many people infected by one infected person, recently fell from an average of 1.2 to around 1.1.
On Sunday, authorities reported about 20,600 new infections in one day, nearly 7,700 fewer than the previous Sunday. 541 people died with Sars-CoV-2 in 24 hours. In total, about 1.585 million corona cases and nearly 55,000 deaths per corona have been recorded since the start of the pandemic. (pbe / SDA)
