The bar committee and the club have changed their mind. It encourages its members to obey the law.
- The Zurich Bar and Club Commission recommends to its members on Friday afternoon that they allow a maximum of 100 people this weekend.
- On Wednesday, he interpreted the Zurich government ordinance differently: With a mask requirement, the 100 limit could be bypassed.
- Because the canton views it differently and the police have set a “threatening backdrop,” they are now backing off, they say.
There is great uncertainty among its members, the Zurich Lawyers and Clubs Committee said in a press release on Friday afternoon. Triggered by statements by the canton in the media and the “threat mounted by the police.”
That is why the Bar and Club Commission now recommends its members not to hold any events with more than 100 people this weekend, not even with the obligation to wear a mask. So she is backing down, in the middle of the week, the bar and club commission interpreted the new Crown law of the Zurich government differently.
No exception thanks to mask requirement
Then the Zurich government made its position clear: the new Covid regulation leaves no room for interpretation. Government spokesman Andreas Melchior said of the “Regionaljournal”: “The regulation explicitly defines clubs, bars, dance halls and discos as restaurants.”
For these, unlike events, there has been a restriction of 100 people indoors and a total of 300 people if the restaurant has an outdoor area since Thursday. “This requirement cannot be circumvented with a mask requirement,” says Melchior.
When the event and the club night are not the same
But the Zurich bar and club committee, the spokesperson for Zurich’s nightlife, declined to know. Its president, Marc Blickenstorfer, a lawyer by training, adhered to the previous vision when asked by the “Regional Newspaper”. “We read the regulations differently and cannot understand why different rules should apply to a dance event than to a club night.”
Therefore, the commission upheld its recommendation to bar and club operators to enforce a mask requirement and receive more guests in return. Because for them it is a question of existence, according to president Marc Blickenstorfer: “If the clubs adhere to the cantonal regulations, they cannot survive economically.”
At the same time, the Zurich city police announced that they would implement the new ordinance in the interest of the governing council.
