This has to do with the fact that President Hashim Thaçi resigned in the summer because he was indicted in the new Kosovo Special Court in The Hague for war crimes and political assassinations immediately after the war. Parties in parliament have long bargained over who can appoint the new president and cannot reach an agreement. The necessary two-thirds majority is not produced.
Who will benefit from the reelection of parliament? Most likely, Albin Kurti and his left-wing nationalist Vetevendosje party will benefit. It was also he who filed the complaint with the Constitutional Court. A year ago, Kurti won the parliamentary elections and became the new prime minister. He was supported by the party of the current Prime Minister Hoti. But Kurti betrayed him shortly afterwards and formed a new government with the help of the United States.

This political haggling enraged Kurti’s voters and disappointed many of Hoti’s voters. Hoti’s betrayal of Kurti is likely to have consequences in the next election. There was a preview in a recent local election. Kurti emerged victorious in a previous stronghold of Hoti’s party.
What does Albin Kurti mean? It represents a new beginning. When he was elected a year ago, many people in Kosovo expected him to do something serious about rampant corruption, that he would work to ensure that prosecutors and courts were independent and that they ultimately took action against corruption and organized crime. Unlike almost all other political forces in Kosovo, Kurti has not yet engaged in corrupt business.
