- The unfortunate “Ever Given” freighter remains in the Suez Canal for the time being.
- The canal authority is demanding compensation of almost one billion Swiss francs for the blockade that lasted days and will only allow the journey to continue once an agreement has been reached.
“We worked hard and worked hard to rescue the ship. We lost income every day. We are entitled to compensation, ”Usama Rabi, chairman of the channel authority, said, according to the state-run Al-Ahram news site.
“Ever Given” is currently located on the Great Bitter Lake between the northern and southern parts of the Suez Canal. In its request, the authority refers, among other things, to losses of 13 to 14 million francs a day as well as the working hours with excavators and tugs to uncover the 400-meter-long ship. Rabi said there was a cargo on board worth $ 3.5 billion. “We saved the ship and its cargo.”
According to its president Eric Hsieh, the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine, which chartered the ship, is not responsible for the late shipment. Possible damages would be covered by insurance, Hsieh said according to the Bloomberg financial intelligence service. But you could be responsible for the delays of other ships that had to wait hundreds of days to pass through the canal.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear.
Several investigations should clarify how the accident occurred: among other things, Egypt wants to evaluate the trip data recorder and speak with the 25 crew members. The Panama Maritime Authority, under whose flag the ship sails, and the company responsible for technical management, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), have also announced their own investigations.
